GINNY is ;;
--- SELF-RELIANT ;; Growing up the youngest of seven children, Ginny learned quickly that if she wanted her brothers to treat her as an equal, she needed to be able to take care of herself. After the events of her first year, Ginny worked hard to ensure she would never be caught in a position of such helplessness ever again. On her own in her sixth year, Ginny demonstrated her resourcefulness over and over, designing pranks for the DA to destabilize the Death Eater’s regime. She doesn’t like to ask others for help and hates it when people try to do things for her or assume she can’t handle things.
--- SMART ;; Ginny is both book-smart and people-smart. Academically, she still received top scores despite starting her education nearly a year late thanks to the diary. She received N.E.W.T.s in DADA, Charms, Potions, and Muggle Studies. Ginny’s real smarts, however, have to do with reading people (she did, after all, grow up with six very different brothers). In addition to being an excellent judge of character, Ginny has plenty of common sense and isn’t afraid to use it.
--- SNARKY ;; Ginny picked up her sense of humor from Fred, George, Sirius, and Snape. She found that her snarkiness was a way to break the ice with classmates who weren’t sure what to make of the girl who had been kidnapped. Her cool, cutting delivery can be seen especially in her exchange with Harry during her fourth year, when he says that he had forgotten she had been possessed by Voldemort, and she responds, “Lucky you.”

Born to Molly and Arthur Weasley, Ginny was the long-desired daughter. As the youngest and the only girl, she was a little bit spoiled and a little bit bullied by her older brothers, but her relationship with each of her family members is a little more complicated than that.
From the moment she was born, Bill might have called her his “little princess”, but he never made her feel as if she had to earn that title. She could be covered in dirt from playing in the garden or dressed in Ron’s hand-me-downs, but Bill was the only one of her brothers who would still treat her like a little princess.
Charlie was the quiet brother who never underestimated her; he was the only brother who would take her for a ride on his Cleansweep, and it was Charlie who taught her to fly. He never treated her as though she were any more or less special for being the youngest or a girl, and gave Ginny much of her confidence.
Percy was Ginny’s reliable brother, but also the most annoying. To Percy, Ginny was just another little sibling to boss around in his games of “Minister of Magic”. Nevertheless, as a young child, Ginny counted on Percy to teach her anything she wanted to know so she could keep up with Ron and the twins, and Percy provided a calm balance to the madness of the Weasley household.
Fred and George honed Ginny’s self-defense reflexes and keen sense of humor by alternately making her the victim or including her in their many pranks. The twins made Ginny see that crying got you nowhere, and she was determined to prove to them that she was tough and could take their teasing. Fred taught Ginny to give as good as she got, while George taught her (during the memorable Dragon Pox Incident) that laughter really is the best medicine.
Before he went off to Hogwarts, it was Ron and Ginny against the world. He was her constant playmate and her best friend. It was often Ron-and-Ginny versus Fred-and-George, and when Ron went off to Hogwarts, Ginny was devastated.
Once Ginny was the only child in the house, she found herself the center of her mother’s attentions. Far from welcoming all the attention, Ginny found it smothering, and thus began the tension between Ginny and Molly. Whereas Ginny always felt the need to prove herself and keep up with her brothers, Molly couldn’t understand why Ginny wasn’t happy to be singled out for special attention.
Ginny’s horrific first year fractured her relationships with all of her siblings. Her parents chose to spend their drawing winnings on a holiday to Egypt in part to get Ginny out of the country, hoping that a visit with Bill, her closest brother after Ron, would help Ginny heal. The change of scenery and seeing Bill helped a little, but not enough. The distance between Egypt and England had become a distance between Bill and Ginny. Bill had been gone for so long that, although he was supportive, he didn’t really understand that Ginny was no longer the little girl she had been when he left.
Ginny’s second year was extremely difficult. The events of her first year had prevented her from making friends at Hogwarts. While no one knew the details of what had happened, everyone knew that Ginny was “That Girl Who Was Kidnapped Into The Chamber” and those who didn’t press her for details awkwardly avoided her. When Ron kicked her out of the carriage, Ginny was hurt. She wandered through the train looking for an empty compartment, finally finding one that contained Luna Lovegood. Luna was Ginny’s first real friend outside of her family.
Ginny struggled with panic attacks throughout her second year. Every time she forgot a quill or couldn’t remember what someone had said, she wondered if part of Tom was still inside her. Luna and Remus recognized Ginny’s stress and helped her find closure. Luna provided stability. She never treated Ginny like she was weird nor did she ask intrusive questions. Ginny fiercely devoted herself to DADA, promising herself that she would never be a damsel in distress again. Remus, seeing Ginny’s hard work, often suggested additional books and spells. It was Remus who taught Ginny the Bat-Bogey Hex.
With the ghost of Tom Riddle more or less behind her, Ginny was determined not to be seen as the innocent little girl she once had been. This included the way she acted around Harry. No longer a star-struck tween, Ginny resolved not to cling to the idea of Harry anymore. Becoming closer to Hermione over the summer, she took the older girl’s advice and decided to treat Harry like any other friend. During her third year, Ginny continued to excel at DADA and Charms.
Over the summer, Ginny moved into Grimmauld Place and befriended Sirius Black. Sirius recognized what none of the other members of Ginny’s family could understand: her brush with Dark Magic had left her old beyond her years. Sirius’ cousin Tonks was Ginny’s first female role model, who showed Ginny that it was possible to be both strong and feminine.
Ginny began to play the field in her fourth year, both on and off the Quidditch Pitch. Quidditch gave her an outlet for her frustration with Harry and with Umbridge. She started going out with Michael Corner, partly because he asked her and partly because she wanted to see if her crush on Harry was something she could “get over”. She was thrilled to be part of the DA and have Harry see her as an equal at last. Harry’s relationship with Cho Chang came as a huge blow, despite Hermione’s reassurances that it would never last (it also left her with a lifelong resentment towards Cho Chang).
The attack on Arthur helped Ginny put her problems in perspective. She did a lot of thinking that night, realizing that she was going to end up in the middle of the war against Voldemort no matter how much other people wanted her out of it. She thought she was ready to join the fight, but the battle in the Department of Mysteries showed her just how naïve her thinking was.
Ginny emerged from the Department of Mysteries more determined than ever to develop her Defense skills. Sirius’ death made her face her own mortality; somehow, it struck her harder this time than when she had been the one who almost died. Her relationship with Dean fell apart because he kept trying to protect and help her. At the same time, Ginny was realizing that her crush on Harry had solidified into something real and true.
Ginny understood when Harry broke up with her, but when he left with Ron and Hermione, she felt abandoned and betrayed. Throughout her sixth year, she struggled with her love and anger for Harry. Horrified by Snape and the Carrows, she and Neville and Luna restarted the DA. While Ginny wanted to fight, she nevertheless tried not to draw attention to herself because she didn’t want anyone to discover Ron’s absence and the extent of her family’s involvement in and knowledge of the war effort. The DA allowed her to take an active part in the war effort while keeping a somewhat low profile. Of course, even though Ginny could keep her mouth shut, she couldn’t stop trying to defend her classmates. She was beaten on occasion and students practiced the Cruciatus Curse on her in some of her worse detentions, but her status as a pureblood offered her the protection denied to Seamus and others who drew the Carrows’ wrath.
Ginny returned to Hogwarts in September after the final battle, where she was captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team for two years. It was very difficult for her to be separated from Harry so soon after being reunited, but he made as many trips to Hogsmeade as his Auror training would allow, and McGonagall frequently turned a blind eye when Ginny snuck out of the castle to meet him.
Now, two years after the final battle, Ginny has been recruited by the Holyhead Harpies and commutes from the Burrow. She spends most of her time in training, but what little time she has outside of training she spends with Harry, Ron, Hermione, Luna, and Neville.
On a chilly morning in late November, Lily and Emily had just taken their customary seats at the Gryffindor table when a school owl swooped down in front of them, its wingtips gently brushing their goblets.
Emily didn’t bother glancing up. There wasn’t anyone who would write to her at Hogwarts, and Lily received mail regularly. Therefore she was quite surprised when the barn owl hopped toward her and extended its leg, to which a postcard was attached.
“It’s for you!” said Lily excitedly.
“Me? Don’t be ridiculous,” Emily scoffed. “I never get mail!”
The owl hooted imperiously and shook its foot.
“Well, you’ve got mail now,” Lily remarked, peering at the postcard, “it’s certainly addressed to you.”
Emily frowned slightly and untied the postcard from the owl’s leg. The great bird immediately soared into the air towards the Owlery. Lily examined the card. On the front was a beautiful photograph of the French Riviera. When she turned it over, she saw it was indeed addressed to “Miss Emily Smith, c/o Professor Longbottom, Hogwarts School for the Gifted and Talented, Scotland.” Emily smiled a little at the Muggle rendition of Hogwarts’ address. The letter, which took up every square inch of the card and was written in tiny, cramped letters read:
“Dear Emily,
I hope you are having a lovely time at school. Are the classes difficult? I’m sure they’re nothing you can’t handle.
I have the most wonderful news! Andre and I are married! We’re in the French Riviera now for our honeymoon, and I have to say it is absolutely spectacular. Andre and I are so happy, it’s hard to believe that this time two years ago we each didn’t know the other existed!
As I think I told you, Andre works here in France. Now that we’re married, I’m going to move in with him – I’ve gotten a job working for Social Services and I start in two weeks. So, I’m leaving St. Mary’s for good and I’m afraid I won’t be seeing you at Christmas. I’m really going to miss our discussions about books, but I’m sure you’ll keep reading regardless. I’m sorry I’m writing this good-bye instead of telling you myself, but there’s really no way for me to see you. So, these hugs and kisses will have to suffice as my good-bye and Christmas present.
XOXO
All the best,
Amanda
Emily put the postcard in her schoolbag and tried to smile. “Amanda – the lady I told you about – got married a few weeks ago. She’s moving to France immediately.”
“Oh, that’s great!” gushed Lily. Emily merely shrugged.
“What’s wrong?” Lily probed.
“Nothing,” Emily muttered, “it’s just that she was the only reason I was able to stand the idea of going back to St. Mary’s for the holidays.”
“Oh.” A pensive look came across Lily’s face. “Well, you can always stay at Hogwarts over the winter holidays. The Christmas feast is pretty amazing, from what I’ve heard, though we always have Christmas at the Burrow.”
“Yeah, Hogwarts sounds a lot more appealing than going back to London. I think I’ll sign up to stay.”
“Mmhm,” Lily nodded absentmindedly.
Over the next two weeks, it seemed to Emily that her best friend was uncharacteristically anxious. Several times she caught Lily in furtive conversations with Albus and James, and after History of Magic on Thursday Lily dashed off, shouting “I’m going to the Owlery, save me a seat at lunch!”
The next morning, Lily and Hugo eagerly scanned the flock of incoming owls for Godric. They weren’t disappointed – the snowy owl fluttered down in front of the two siblings. Lily snatched at the letter, Al and Hugo reading eagerly over her shoulder.
“Yes!” Lily gave a squeal of delight, “I knew they’d say yes!”
She turned to Emily, eyes wide. “Emily, would you like to come to our house for the holidays and have Christmas at the Burrow?”
Emily’s jaw dropped.
“You don’t have to if you don’t want to,” said Albus hurriedly.
“Are you kidding? Of course I want to!” Emily shrieked. “That is,” she added more calmly, “if your parents don’t mind or anything. I don’t want to be a bother…” she trailed off. Lily, Al and Hugo were looking at her as though she’d grown two heads.
“Don’t be ridiculous,” said Lily. “I know how disappointed you were that Amanda wouldn’t be in London. I just wrote Mum and Dad a letter casually mentioning you didn’t have anyone to spend the holidays with, and asked if you could come with us. Dad said absolutely, there was no way you were spending your first Christmas as a witch in Muggle London or at Hogwarts by yourself. They can’t wait to meet you. ”
“And Dad got special permission from the Ministry and everything, so the Muggles in charge will just think you’re just staying at school for the holidays!” added Al.
Emily felt a lump rise in her throat. She threw her arms around both of them, murmuring into Lily’s hair, “Thank you, thank you, thank you. It’s the best present I could ever have asked for.”
Hey there! I'm EMILY. I'm 19, and I've never role played before. I found LMCI through DODI. My favorite Harry Potter is THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN.
